The Reformation Crisis in 1559 in North-East Fife

with Dr Bess Rhodes, St Andrews University

Dr Bess Rhodes, St Andrews University

In the summer of 1559 Fife became the centre of a religious revolution. Groups of Protestant activists
stormed local churches, smashed altars and images, and took up arms against the Catholic religious authorities.
This talk considers why local grievances turned into a national rebellion, and how the residents of Fife helped transform the faith of Scotland.
